First-Gen Fridays is a monthly event series where we bring first-gen students together for free food and resources to help build a sense of community and a network of support for our first-generation college students.
We currently hold dinners one Friday a month where we invite first-gen faculty and staff to meet with our first-gen students to tell them their stories and to pass on any words of wisdom they may have. We are hoping to evolve our First-Gen Fridays to where we take first-gen students off campus to participate in team building exercises, like in escape rooms or ropes courses.

A first-generation college student is defined as a student whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor's degree.
First generation college students at Tulane University have many reasons to be proud. They are the first members of their family to complete a bachelor’s degree, which is an incredible achievement. A strong network of support can play a significant role in their academic accomplishments. At the Center for Academic Equity, it’s our job to empower first-generation college students by connecting them to educational resources, summer grants, and opportunities for campus involvement.
Pell Grant eligibility generally signals low income status. However, there are many factors.
If you contact Charles Mukaida with the Center for Academic Equity, cmukaida@tulane.edu, he can work with you and partners at financial aid to determine your status.
Every First Fridays will serve refreshments and offer free swag to event participants.
