The Center for Academic Equity can support you during your summer with as much as $1,500 if you are pursuing original undergraduate research, a short-term study abroad experience, or an unpaid internship. We offer a variety of grants, scholarships, or stipends to cover associated expenses. Supporting these opportunities is important to the Center, as we believe the hands-on experiences can provide you with pathways to future careers and prepare you for employment and graduate school admissions.
If you are rewarded a summer grant or fellowship, you will reflect on and summarize your experience by presenting at the annual NTC Research & Idea Symposium.
Summer 2023 applications
Unpaid or Minimally Paid Internship applications are closed.
Study Abroad and Research Fellowship applications are closed.
The Center for Academic Equity will award undergraduate research summer fellowships to outstanding applicants across any field of study at Tulane University. To be considered for a fellowship you must meet the minimum 2.5 GPA requirement, complete the application, and agree to participate in the annual NTC Research & Idea Symposium.
All full-time continuing Newcomb-Tulane College students within the Center for Academic Equity cohort, regardless of discipline or major, may apply. Previous research experience is not required.
Work Guidelines
You should commit to working on a project for which you receive funding for no less than 35 hours per week for at least four weeks. Start/end dates should be articulated in the application.
The Center encourages you to seek the support of faculty mentor and/or a content expert in their field of study. A faculty mentor is a subject matter expert who can help you define your research goals, and then support you in your quest to achieve them. Your mentor will also share knowledge, encourage, and hopefully inspire you. This person can help you develop a proposal and will provide you with a discipline-specific sounding board for your research and reporting endeavors. Depending on your research experience this role can include daily interactions or weekly check-ins.
Application Components
You can start by identifying a faculty member or content expert who may have sparked your interest in a topic relevant to your research proposal. You can reach out to them and inquire about their wiliness to serve in this capacity. Once you have done this, complete summer research grant application and submit all relevant documents by the given deadline:
- Application Form
- Cover Letter
- Budget
- Letter of Recommendation. (Your application will not be complete without the submission of a letter of recommendation supporting your application. The letter of recommendation need not come from your research supervisor).
Applications must be submitted by March 15 2023, at 5 PM Central Standard Time. The committee will not review late applications.
All grant recipients are required to participate in the NTC Research & Idea Symposium poster session during the 2023-2024 academic year. Students studying abroad are required to submit the NTC Research & Idea Symposium components by their due date but may receive an event attendance waiver. Posters and Photos are due on a timeline beginning August 1, 2023, at 5 PM CST.
If you are applying for unpaid internships or minimally paying internships, you may request funding to cover living expenses. To be considered for this award, you must complete the application, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, show proof you have been accepted or are applying to an uncompensated or minimally paying internship, and agree to participate in the Idea Symposium. Successful applications will also underscore how the proposed internship constitutes a unique experience capable of elevating your career or graduate school goal.
Your award, if received, is dependent on your securing the internship outlined in this application. The Center will distribute stipends in increments throughout the summer, and each installment is contingent on being in good standing with the internship program.
All full-time continuing Newcomb-Tulane College students within the Center for Academic Equity cohort, regardless of discipline or major, may apply.
Work Guidelines
The Center for Academic Equity’s unpaid or minimally paid internship grant can support internship experiences connected to any industry or area of study. Unpaid internships are those for which the student receives no compensation. Minimally paid internships provide students with some benefit (such as a stipend, housing, transit card, etc.) but the cost of engaging in the internship far exceeds the support provided.
